razzleccentric: (For Science!)

Thought I was done? Not even close! Even with a big cut to my commute time I'm still in the car for 6 hours a week. That's a whole bunch of podcasts, mister...

SCIENCE PODCASTS I NEVER MISS:

The Naked Scientists
Those wacky Brits! They even make science sound scandalous! Seriously, though, this is hands (pants?) down THE best science program out there. It's fun, it's interesting, they answer real peoples' questions, and they have a fun little quiz every week. Coolest of all, they have a great piece called "Kitchen Science" that walks you through a science experiment that you can do at home with the infamous common everyday household items. The Naked Scientists are SUCH fun. You really should listen up.

ABC Radio National - The Science Show
The Award for Classiest Science Show (were there such a thing) would definitely go to this one. That's the Australian, NOT American, Broadcasting Company, by the way. Their stories are deep and beautifully written, funny at times, always fascinating. I'm a total Robyn Williams fangirl.

SciPod - New Scientist Magazine
A joint effort of UK and US scientists, this is another fun and always entertaining science news show. Sometimes they have themes, sometimes not. Sometimes they have interviews. It's all good!

Berkeley Groks
This is the first science podcast I started listening to (that wasn't already a radio program I'd heard). Much more informal, sometimes very silly, doctors Charles Lee and Frank Ling are always a trip. Sometimes... the subject matter gets very technical. Sometimes... their interviews make me a little sleepy when the guest is a droner. But it's definitely all worthwhile just to hear them giggle like schoolboys every time the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is mentioned.

I ALSO LIKE...

This Week In Science - Kickass Science Podcast
Just started listening to this one and it's funny and highly energetic. Great science podcast for people with limited attention spans.

Science on Guardian Unlimited
Another recent discovery with lots of humor and perky British people. See, science can be VERY entertaining. The UK will show us the way.

Science Friday with Ira Flatow
I've been listening to this show for yeeeeeears on the radio, and it's always excellent. A variety of topics, interesting interviews, etc. etc.

Explorations with Dr. Michio Kaku
Professor of theoretical physics at the City College of New York, cofounder of string field theory, currently working on Einstein's unification theory of everything. Yeah, it can get deep. But he's another one I've adored via radio for many years.

I DO NOT LIKE...

AAAS Science Magazine
It's not that they didn't have interesting topics (science is always interesting). I just thought their delivery was bland, plastic, and not any fun. The other major problem is that the podcast feels like an advertisement for the AAAS. I know the AAAS puts it out. But I can't afford to join the AAAS. I get tired of hearing about the AAAS. Stop saying AAAS...

I'M GONNA TRY...

The Loh Down on Science
From the California Institute of Technology. It's humorous & only 2 minutes long but that's probably best - I don't think I can handle another full-length science podcast at this point.
