Random foodie rambles
Mar. 30th, 2007 07:42 pmFirst off, a nice little video summary on the local food concept by Brian Halweil - coincidentally the author of "Eat Here." :)
Speaking of locavores, there is a Penny-Wise Eat Local Challenge being conducted April 23 to April 29. It's an informal test to see just how expensive/possible eating local can be using the Department of Labor's estimates of average food expenditures. For example, the DoL claims that with 2+ persons in the family and one wage earner, that family spends $121 a week on food. That sounds pretty generous to me, depending on how many kids are involved, I guess.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters made NUMBER ONE on the Top 100 Corporate Citizens list of 2007. Wow! Now if they'd just bring back my favorite flavor. (FYI, Starbucks made #9.)
Speaking of Starbucks, I think McDonald's hijacked their decorator.

Yet another Michael Pollan interview. Bless his heart, he's certainly a hot commodity these days. While we're at it...
"Eat with consciousness. When you eat with consciousness, and you know what you're eating, and you eat it in full appreciation of what it is, it's enormously satisfying. You also confront certain ethical dilemmas. I think it's important that we do that. One of the most irresponsible things we can do is eat in ignorance, without any awareness of what our eating is doing to the world or to other species."

Holiday yummies: Pastel sugar-free Peeps? Screw that, I want me some Cadbury Creme Egg ice cream or a Creme Egg McFlurry! Now I know I should to plan my dream vacation to the U.K. for some future April...
