Darwinian Valentine

An awe-inspiring piece of biological lurve from Jill at Skepchicks. Head over there now and vote in the Darwinian Valentine Contest!

Tuesday was Darwin Day, yesterday began Lupercalia, and today is Valentine's Day for some, Science Day for others (hi [livejournal.com profile] tupelo!). Whatever you're celebrating, have a great time.

Oh, and if you live in Texas, run - don't walk - to your nearest adult superstore in a buying frenzy to celebrate the sudden outbreak of reason down there. I only wish Molly Ivins was still alive to see this glorious day. Enjoy!

Love the cartoon...

What a fun week all around, it seems (except for Sally's encounter with "duck-lips" and K-Y jelly at the OB/GYN it's been pretty good)!

The following is my new part in The Vagina Monologues (I let the director know that we need to strike Texas from the list as of today!):

Here is an outrageous Vagina Fact (that has been updated to reflect current research) from the book “The Technology of Orgasm,” by Rachel Maines:

It is illegal to sell vibrators in the following states: Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia and Indiana. In some states, if you are caught with intent to sell, you could receive up to five thousand dollars in fines and face up to 3 years of hard labor. It is totally legal to sell guns in all of these states. We have yet to hear of a mass murder committed with a vibrator.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about Indiana on that one, either. There's a sex shop near downtown - I'll have to go ask 'em.

The Indiana legislature is working on House Bill 1042 which "Requires a person that intends to sell sexually explicit materials, products, or services to register and file a statement with the secretary of state" - which makes it sound like selling them isn't illegal, just ridiculously regulated.

Oooh, check this out: a recent AP article says they're only still banned in Mississippi and Alabama now. The other states are good to go. How old is that Maines book? ;)

I know it's irrelevant to political shenanigans, but IU Bloomington is home to The Kinsey Insitutue - which I didn't know until, like, recently. *wink* Check out the awesome events list!

Makes me wonder...I will let the director know that the monologue is outdated. maybe we can say "until 2008 or 2007" or something...(whatever year the bans were lifted).
