Raw tomatoes are bad, mmmmkay? (Yeah, I already mentioned this, but here's a nice map of the affected areas.)

USDA Strike 1: While the FDA fumbles the tomatoes, the USDA has been busy slashing research programs. They killed a research program on grass-fed animal pasturing. They don't care if it's healthier or not.

USDA Strike 2: "Within a few months" the USDA may actually get around to banning downer cattle from the food supply - while at the same time continuing to prevent a private company from testing its beef for BSE. Mixed signals are their specialty.

USDA Strike 3: The USDA believes everything Tyson Foods says and in doing so missed the fact that Tyson used antibiotics on its "antibiotic-free" chickens. (I do not and will never knowingly buy Tyson products. It's on my shit list with Smithfield.)

USDA Strike OMGWTFBBQ: In a mind-boggling move that passed almost completely under the news media radar, the USDA has also stopped tracking all pesticide use in the United States. Let me repeat that: STOPPED TRACKING ALL PESTICIDE USE. What. The. Fuck.

Coincidentally, Germany has recently banned a number of pesticides manufactured by Bayer because they have been linked to honeybee death and colony collapse disorder. Yet its cause remains a mystery in the U.S. Go figure.

Well, since we're just on our own now with all this environment & agriculture stuff, would you like to grow some sunflowers and help study the poor bees? Join the Great Sunflower Project! You can also eat some Haagan-Daz ice cream.

In lighter news, your cellphone is not going to pop your corn. It would already have cooked your ears and fingers if it could do that.

You can watch the Galloping Gourmet online. He's a classic.

Ted Allen has a new Food Network TV show - Food Detectives! Sounds fun.

Did you know Robin Williams played a Locavore on Law and Order? What a great alibi!

Gonna go eat some ice cream now and ponder the end of the world.

I can't wait to see what they have at the farmers market. I'm not a raw tomato fan (usually) but for fresh and local I'll give it a good try. :D

If all the FDA stuff isn't enough to be a vegetarian and a localvore I don't know what is...
