From [livejournal.com profile] peradouro:

Famous fossil Lucy starts US tour - (they snuck it out in the middle of the night)

Because it's a good idea to box up irreplacable, 3.2 million year old A. afarensis remains and ship them all over the freakin' United States. Aaaaaaaaaa! AAAAAAAAAAAAA!

The situation is so complex. The Smithsonian has refused to participate in this tour. But evangelicals in other African countries want to censor fossil displays there and African museums certainly need better funding. So for the world to see and care about these treasures, must they be removed from their countries of origin?

How great is the potential for Creationist terrorism on such a priceless display in the United States...?

Wow - I am torn between really wanting to see Lucy and the gut feeling that this is a Very Bad Idea...

This is such a complex situation... While I agree that it's incredibly stupid for moving the fossils when a cast would be sufficient, I'm actually very curious to see them. If they are housed in Chicago, I'll have to weigh my desire to view them with the lack of integrity it would encompass because I don't agree with them being moved in the first place.

But you are correct. When you throw in the nutjob religious in this country, what's to stop a fit of zealousness that someone burn down any museum where they are housed in an attempt to destroy any "potential" evidence of evolution?

This would be so much easier if people weren't stupid... on both sides of the equation.

Seriously, that's how I feel. They are giving me a chance to see something so mindblowingly amazing that I never dreamed I'd get a chance to see in my life... but if I go to see it I'm supporting something I think is a Really Bad Idea. Aaaaaaaaaa!

I don't see any reason to remove the original when they can easily make a replica and use that instead. I am also interested in seeing the bones, but since I would have no idea if I were staring at the real thing or a reproduction, a replica would have been fine with me.

"Excuse me, Miss, can you step out of line here and take off your shoes for a security check...my, that is an interesting *almost* opposable toe..."

Thank you, for posting this, [livejournal.com profile] razzle! I sent it on to my friend [livejournal.com profile] biogeekgirl who always has interesting stories to tell about trying to teach evolutionary theory to creationists in a Christian college.
