Imagining Our Medical Future: The Ethics of Predictive Genetic Testing and the Search for Personalized Drugs

Sunday, November 09, 2008 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
at Indiana Medical History Museum, 3045 W. Vermont St., Indianapolis, IN 46222

Category:
Humanities
Event Format:
Discussion, Display, Exhibit, Lecture, Panel, Q & A Session, Tour

Dr. David Flockhart, M.D, Ph.D., Dr. Eric M. Meslin, Ph.D., Dr. Kimberly Quaid, Ph.D.

Event Description:

When scientists deciphered the human genome in 2003, they ushered in a new era for medicine, enabling the development of predictive genetic tests and personalized drugs. These imaginative advances raise profound ethical questions: Should people be tested for diseases that have no treatment? Would you want to take a personalized drug, knowing that your medical information might be shared with third parties? A panel of experts from the Indiana University Center for Bioethics and the Indiana University School of Medicine will share real-life examples that illustrate how ethics, medicine, and science intersect. Panelists include Dr. David Flockhart, chief of the division of clinical pharmacology; Dr. Eric M. Meslin, director of the Center for Bioethics and professor of medicine, molecular genetics, and philosophy; and Dr. Kimberly A. Quaid, professor of medical and molecular genetics. Q&A will follow.

Enjoy a free tour of the Indiana Medical History Museum one hour before or after the program. Free. Presented by Center for Inquiry Indiana, Indiana Medical History Museum, IU School of Medicine Center for Bioethics at IUPUI, and IUPUI Freethinkers. Questions?
