razzleccentric: (Food: HFCS Kills!)

Did you know... Coca Cola makes a limited supply of Coke with REAL SUGAR for Passover???

I didn't. I'd like to get my grubby paws on some of that.

Another interesting part of this story is that Coca Cola switched over to HFCS in place of sugar in 1985. I don't remember anything about that factor specifically (back then I was far removed from the level of food-industry-hyperawareness that permeates my being now) but apparently it was all part and parcel of the New Coke Fiasco of '85. Lord, I do remember that terrible time. I LOATHED New Coke with a burning passion that drove me into the sickly sweet, crazy caffeinated arms of Mountain Dew. And by the time Classic Coke finally came back, it was imbued with HFCS and my taste buds were too devastated by the Dew to tell the difference.

Damn you, Pepsi, damn you to hell. You ruined the Coke of my childhood. I always said you were Satan's soda.

I believe that coke sold in some other countries is also made with real sugar and you can sometimes find that version in Mexican grocery stores.

It does taste different. I didn't know why though. Now I know! lol I hadn't drank Coke for years before we lived in MX because it tasted so much different.

Pepsi is definitely Satan's soda.

And around here, you can get Coke in glass bottles with actual sugar at some Mexican restaurants. It's imported from Mexico.

But isn't the bottle like a liter or so? We can get it up here in Dallas for about $1.50 for a half liter at Central Market.

Yeah. Coke has made kosher Coke for years. We always get a 2 liter or two around Passover time, just so we can have some. I'd suggest checking at upper-end grocery stores, or grocery stores in significantly Jewish areas of your town..

Here in LA we've found some stores that sell Coke from Mexico, which also has sugar instead of HFCS. Mmm!

And I think the switch to HFCS in 1985 might be a myth. I found this snopes article when checking out soda and cane sugar

Indeed!

In 1980, five years before the introduction of New Coke, half the cane sugar in Coca-Cola had been replaced with high fructose corn syrup. By six months prior to New Coke's knocking the original Coca-Cola off the shelves, there was no cane sugar in American Coca-Cola. Whether they knew it or not, what consumers were drinking then was 100% sweetened by high fructose corn syrup.
