Poisoned pet food

I was kind of wondering when/if anyone would find the smoking gun behind the pet food recall. Apparently the New York State Dept. of Ag has verified it: Rat poison.

Aminopterin is used as a rat poison in other countries, like China, and it was in a batch of imported wheat used in making "cuts & gravy" style cat and dog food.

Those who know me well know I used to rant about pet food *years* ago. How warped is it that we're feeding our cuddly little carnivores a diet of predominantly wheat and corn? Why does this grain-mad nation have to import wheat? Do you have any idea what other kinds of crap go into pet food? It's disgusting! But, given the extent to which humans have screwed up the evolutionary diet of just about everything we touch, not surprising.

I'm so sorry for the people and pets that suffered because of this negligence. I count myself very lucky that the cat food I use wasn't on that list.

Back when I drove 18 wheelers, I once went up to Canada to pick up a load of rancid meat for dog food. They would basically dry it out then use it for protien in dry dog food.

There was a time when we were mac-n-cheese living, you know? We tried to do our best for our pets though, avoiding the grocery store brands and at least going the lamb-and-rice version of whatever we could afford next.

This scare has me to the point that, since they are getting older (my faithful dog is 13, my grumpy cat is 14) and we can afford it, we are going to switch to the better stuff we can get from some place like PetSmart with healthier properties. They have reached a point in their lives that they are eating less, and I want them to stay healthy as long as they can.

This whole thing terrifies me. What AREN'T they telling us? Did any of the other manufacturers buy wheat from this supplier? Like manufacturers of the dry food that I feed Darling K and Noenoe?

There is a holistic pet store in Sarasota that I guess I'll be shelling out money to from here on out. I couldn't live with the thought that I was hurting my pets.
